ICELAND

Summer 2018

Overview & Rough Itinerary

Summer 2018

This is a tour that focuses more on the stop-off points rather than the twisties, but the mileage will be absolutely worth it when you are rewarded with fjords, glaciers, mountains, volcanoes, tectonic plates, not to mention incredible wildlife, such as whales, puffins, and artic foxes.  Iceland really is one of those countries that will leave you speechless.

Our tour starts in Reykjavik where we collect our hire bikes before setting off to ride what is known as the Golden Circle.  This loop takes in Thingvellir National Park, active geysers, as well as magnificent waterfalls.

Day 2 starts with a visit to Skogafoss where the more energetic among us can climb the 370 stairs to the very top of the waterfall which will give you spectacular views over the Southern Iceland coastline.  After filling up our water bottles directly from the source, we will continue eastwards towards Skaftafell National Park, taking in a few hidden treasures en route.

We make an early start on day 3 where we spend the morning at the Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon.  If we're lucky, we may get entertained by the seals that often come out to play between the icebergs.  After lunch, we push on into the Eastern Fjords where we will spend the night after tucking into a traditional Icelandic supper.

Days 4 & 5 are spent exploring the wonders of the Myvatn area.  Particular highlights include a visit to Dettifoss, the most powerful waterfall in Europe, walking around pseudocrators, and climbing down into lava caves.  A busy day is rewarded with an evening relaxing at the Myvatn Nature Baths where you can sip on an ice cold beer whist sat in a 40°C natural hot tub!  On our second day in the region, you can choose between two excursions - whale watching out at sea or ice caving.

We tackle the remainder of Route 1 back to Reykjavik on day 6 where we spend our final night before flying back home.

Highlights

US Nave Plane Wreck

In 1973 a US Navy DC3 was forced to land on a black sand beach in Southern Iceland, where iit has remained ever since.  Health & Safety would have long cleared it up in the UK, but in Iceland it has been left for people to climb up inside and explore - a real treat!

Grjotagja

Fans of the TV series Game of Thrones may recognise this lava cave & hot spring combo from one of the later episodes.  Sadly you are no longer allowed to bathe in the hot water, but you can still climb down into the cave and feel that natural heat.

Hot Springs

Iceland is full of natural hot springs but we have found a few really remote spots where you can take a dip in 40°C water surrounded by nothing but nature (and your fellow biker buddies!)

The Important Stuff

Breakdown Cover

Breakdowns are a sad fact of motorcycle touring and often we can get bikes back up and running between us, but due to the level of mileage and nature of this tour, where you choose to use your own motorcycle, it is a requirement that you hold suitable Breakdown Cover so that you can be prompty recovered where required.  This is for your benefit,  as much as it is for everyone elses.

Travel Insurance inc. Motorcycling

Again, due to the nature of this tour, it is a requirement that you hold suitable travel insurance which covers you for motorcycle riding on the appropriate sized bike.

Bike Fit

Stating the obvious here, but riding 1,000 miles over a week is hard work and something you may need to prepare for.  We will provide tips in our pre-tour pack!
